Praying angel with wings on upper back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic praying angel with long curly hair, clasped hands and feathered wings is set within a radiating halo on the upper back. The shading is soft and smooth, with fine detail in the hair, feathers and folds of the robe, and the highlights are left as bare skin. The image is a close, slightly angled photograph in which the tattoo fills most of the frame.

Mrs Pargeter wanted the room cleared for the auction, so I went in with a bucket of hot water and a stiff brush on a Tuesday in February, expecting dust and cobweb.

She was smaller than I remembered from childhood, when my mother used to lift me up to see her hands. Her hair had been painted a dark brown once, and the paint had cracked into a map of tiny rivers. Her wings were plaster too, but someone had carved every feather in the primaries with a thumbnail, and the light from the cracked panes ran along them like water. I scrubbed at the base where moss had grown up through the plinth, and a root came away in my fingers, pale and fat as a carrot, with a green shoot already curled at its tip.
I stood there longer than the job needed. Then I fetched the trowel from the potting shed, and instead of loosening the statue I dug a hole in the bed beside her, a foot deep, and put the root in with its shoot to the sky. I didn't tell Mrs Pargeter. By April the stalk had three leaves and a small white bell hanging from it, and the angel's clasped hands were held just above it, as if she had been waiting to see what came up.
