Fairy with wings on upper back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A fairy in profile leans forward with one arm extended, wearing a hood-like cap and with pointed ears, and her long hair and flowing skirt trail down beside her legs. The linework is dark and clean, with soft grey shading across the body, dress and wings. The image is mostly warm skin tone with the tattoo in greys, and the fairy is centred on the upper back.

Dear Win, the fairy came back on Tuesday, just after the shop bell, and she had the cheek to stand on my cutting table as though it were a stile. You will think I have been at the sherry again. I have not. She wanted her grey silk hem let down, because it has gone to rags at the back from dragging through the hedgerows along Hollin Lane, and she wanted it finished by Friday because there is a dance on the common and the moths are coming.

I told her I would need a finer thread than I had. She leaned across the counter with her hood slipping back and asked after Father's bees, though I had never told her about Father. Mrs Ackroyd from the post office says the back lanes have been full of talk since the new road cut through the bottoms and closed the old path to the mill. Nobody has seen a fairy in Hollin since the war, she says, and nobody has wanted to.
I sat up with the lamp and the silk. When I pinned the hem the pins went in without a prick, and in the morning there was a line of silver dust on my fingers that would not wash off with carbolic. The hem was finished. It was a good inch longer than I had cut it, and under the lamp the stitches had gone in a curve that followed no pattern I know.
She came for it at dusk, lifting the skirt to show me the new edge, and she left half a crown on the cloth and a feather from one wing, the colour of the inside of a shell. I have pinned it to the window frame where the light catches it. Come at Easter and see it for yourself, and bring the good scissors.
Your loving sister, Edie
