Cheshire Cat in a top hat on a forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A cartoon Cheshire Cat lies stretched out with its striped tail curling up, grinning widely and wearing a tall top hat with a purple band. The linework is sketchy and the stripes and fur are built up with soft grey shading. Only the hat band carries colour, so the piece reads as mostly monochrome against the skin.

'Now sit down, the lot of you, because this hall has waited forty years for the end of this and so have my knees,' said Mr Hollis, tapping the dais with his walking stick. 'Who here was in Miss Tennant's form? No? Then you were lucky, because she kept a cat that came in through the top window every Tuesday and sat on the radiator as if it paid the rent.'

The cat had a striped tail that stood up like a question mark and a tall black hat it had taken from the cloakroom peg. Nobody ever saw where it kept the hat. Miss Tennant called it a lodger. The caretaker called it a fox with ideas. The children learned that if you asked it a sum, it would answer with a grin before the rest of it had arrived, a grin so wide that the teeth showed first and the cat came after, like a bad joke.
The autumn the roof leaked over the science block, a girl called Pearl Dunmore bet the cat a shilling that she could find whose hat it really was. She went through the lost property box, the staffroom coats and the bottom drawer of the piano. On the last afternoon she found a strip of purple silk stitched inside the band, with initials nobody in the school recognised. When she looked up, the cat was on the windowsill with its tail curled round its feet, watching her as though the answer had been obvious all along. She blinked. The sill was empty except for a tail-shaped smudge in the dust.
So if any of you see a striped tail curling round the banister tonight, don't ask it a sum. And Pearl, I know you're at the back. Pay up.
