Chest and neck tattoos under a grey shirt
Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A man wearing an open-collared grey button shirt shows dark tattoos on his upper chest and neck, with a script lettering piece and what look like leafy shapes. A tattooed forearm is also visible at the left edge of the frame. The ink appears to be black and grey with soft shading, and the photo is taken in warm daylight from a close, cropped angle.

The bindweed had taken the south wall overnight, the way it always did in June, and Agnes stood with her secateurs open while the boy from the village explained why the medlar had to come out.

"It's dead, Mrs Penhale. Look at the bark on the leeward side, all grey and split." She looked. She had looked in March too, and decided the cold had only frightened it. The tree was Walter's. He had cut the scion from his father's orchard in Lanner the spring their daughter was born and fixed a copper tag to the stake: Royal Medlar, 1931, in his small slanting hand. Forty years of letters had come with that same hand, and the tag was still legible.
"Fetch the long ladder and the sacking," she said. "Then go and get the kettle on."
She found a sucker low by the root, green at the tip and stubborn, and cut a length of it the thickness of a pencil. The boy came back with the ladder and watched her split the stock above a bud, slide the cutting in so the cambium met, and bind it with raffia she had soaked in the water butt. Sap runs under bark where nobody can see it, Walter used to say, and it was true of trees and of most other things she had been slow to forgive.
When she was done she took the copper tag down, turned it over, and wrote beneath his line in soft pencil: Grafted by A. Penhale, 1958. Not finished. She hung it back on the stake and climbed down, and the leaf at the top of the new shoot caught the light like something set in brass.
