The ferry was late again, so the shop smelt of Mum's bread and wet wool when Ailsa brought the drawing in. She had a fist sketched on the back of a chandler's invoice, a red fist with its knuckles set hard, and a black scroll rolled beneath it like a sail reefed tight. The lettering was meant to go across the scroll, but she had left the space empty. "Fill it when he's home," she said. "He's the one who knows the name he wants."

I have been thinking about that all week. Most people bring me words they have already settled on, usually a mother's name or a line off a gravestone. This one wanted a gap left open, which I suppose is the honest thing to do when you cannot know what you'll be when the boat docks at Oban.

So I did the fist first, packing the red in under the black outlines so it looked clenched for a long time, with grey shading down the side where the light from the window would fall. Then the banner, with its curls and its empty ribbon, which I left clean as a new page. The needle hummed like rain on a tin roof, and I told Ailsa that was the island in it.

The shop is shut for the winter and I've put the stencil in the drawer with your letters. When the scroll finally gets its words, they will be whatever the sea has taught him. Write and tell me what you think it should say.
