Man in grey suit with neck tattoo
Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A cropped photo of a man in a grey check suit jacket and black buttoned shirt, with the face out of frame. Dark tattoo work rises above the shirt collar onto the neck and upper chest, with some script-like lettering visible but mostly obscured. The image is a close, front-on crop with soft indoor lighting and a light wall behind.

Mrs Adeyemi brought the grey check in on a Tuesday, a fortnight before the wedding, and asked me to take the jacket in at the waist and let out nothing at all. I told her that usually meant someone had been eating standing up. She didn't laugh. She laid a folded sheet of blue paper on my cutting table, its edges gone soft from handling, and said her husband would never read it if it stayed in his pocket.

The paper held a letter in copperplate, the ink faded to the colour of weak tea. It was addressed to a man called Tobias Creed, dated 1974, and it asked him to meet at the Kingsgate pier and bring nothing but his nerve. She wanted it sewn into the inside breast pocket, behind the silk, where a hand would find it without knowing why. I asked whose letter it was. She said it was her own, written before she was married to anyone, and that she had never sent it.
When I unpicked the lining with my seam ripper, I found a second note tucked under the original stitching, a scrap no bigger than a stamp. It read: 'It was never the pier. Ask him about the boats.' I sat with it under the lamp for a long while. Then I sewed the first letter back exactly where she wanted it and kept the scrap in the tin with my spare pins, because some things a tailor is paid to forget. The jacket went out pressed and perfect on the Saturday, and I like to think that somewhere during the vows a hand moved to the pocket, found the paper, and wondered which of them had been brave.
