Chest script and kitten in black and grey
Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photo of a man in a white tank top holding a tabby kitten against his chest. Script lettering runs across his chest, and black tattoos with ornamental and illustrative designs cover his forearm and upper arm. The image is softly lit, with the lower face cropped out of frame and the focus on the kitten and the arm.

My dearest Brother Aldric, the cat has taken the Captain's chair in the Keep of Mervale, and nobody has dared to lift her out of it. Three weeks ago she was a scrap of tabby fluff under the stables, hissing at the farrier's boots. Now she sleeps on the signet ledger, which the Treasury considers a grave insult.

The guards have made a sort of oath about her. Sergeant Oriel, who once split a shield with his bare hands, carries her about the walls tucked inside his jerkin, her small head poking out at his collar. He says she is the only honest weight he has carried since the siege. Every dawn the men read aloud the old Warden motto cut above the gatehouse: Keep faith, keep your word, keep the hearth. Nobody has asked him to stop.
The knotwork the smith hammered into the gate for the coronation has begun to look like her coat, or perhaps her coat has always looked like the iron. I walked past it yesterday and thought I saw her stretched across the scrollwork, one paw lifted as if to strike a bell. The jeweller swears she is the reincarnation of the old queen's hound. That is nonsense, but I have stopped arguing.
Come at midsummer and bring the good ink. Tell the Warden the kitten has been christened Tallow. She answers to nothing else, and the sergeant has begun answering to her.
