Traditional rose sleeve with hand tattoos
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two arms are shown close together, with a dense sleeve of tattoos on the upper arm and forearm and a tattooed hand resting on a bare thigh. A large rose with thick black outlines sits on the forearm, surrounded by green, red and yellow shading, while the hand and the darker sections of the sleeve are mostly black and grey. The soft, natural lighting and diagonal framing keep the focus on the linework and colour of the arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
On Hallam Ness, where the wind bent every tree flat, there was only one rose, and it grew up the side of Ada Crane's cottage because she had carried the cutting over from the mainland in her apron pocket. Nobody thought it would live. The salt got into everything else.

Her man, Tobias, took the grey boat out past the skerries for herring, and each evening she walked to the wall and tied a red ribbon to the highest bloom so he could find the house in the dark. The old men laughed. They said the sea does not read ribbons. Ada said the sea did not need to read, only to see colour, so she dyed the ribbons in onion skin and marigold and kept the yellow ones for mornings.
One November the boat was late. The rose had let go of every petal but the top one, and that one had gone the deep red of a coal. Ada stood in the wet until the lamp at the point went out, then she went down to the shingle and saw the boat come round the rocks, low in the water, with three men bailing and no sign of Tobias at the oars.
They never did learn what brought the boat home that night. Tobias said a light had been burning in the window the whole way in, though the window was dark when they reached it. Ada said nothing. The next spring the rose came back on the wall, green at the stem and yellow at the heart, and she tied a fresh ribbon to it, and nobody on the island has been able to tell her it is not the same rose.
