Traditional tattoo sleeve holding an orange cat

Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A person in a white ribbed vest holds an orange tabby cat against a tattooed arm, with the face and head cropped out of frame. The arm carries bold traditional-style designs including a swallow, a scroll banner and smaller motifs, with dark outlines and flat fills. The warm, low-light tones and soft focus give the photo a muted, vintage feel.

The cat had come aboard at Gravesend in a coal sack, and by the Horn it considered the whole brig its property. Mr Tully the bosun said a ginger tom past the Line was bad luck, but the cook fed it salt pork and nobody had the heart to put it ashore. Dunmore, who had three swallows inked across his own knuckles, watched it work the rigging with its tail up like a lantern and said nothing.

Off the Falklands the weather turned foul for nine days. The sea came green over the rail and the hands lived in wet wool, and the cat rode out each gust wedged in the coil of the mainsheet, eyes shut, unbothered. On the tenth morning a swallow came out of the grey and landed on the taffrail, far too far from any land, shaking the spray from its blue back. It was thin and done in. Dunmore held his hand out flat, and the bird walked onto his finger as if it had been waiting for him.

The cat went still. Dunmore felt its weight shift against his arm, claws pricking through the cloth, and he remembered the old saying his mother kept on the Kentish farm: a swallow that finds a ship is a sailor who will not drown. He did not tell the bosun. He tied a scrap of red ribbon to the bird's leg, the way the barn wives used to, and let it go toward the sun.

The brig made Valparaiso in March. Dunmore never saw that bird again, but he carried the cat ashore under one arm, and the cat, having decided the matter, did not struggle once.
