Christmas tree with presents on a limb

Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A decorated Christmas tree with a glowing star at the top fills most of the frame, with pink and purple baubles, candy canes, bows and rosettes on its branches. Wrapped presents sit at the base beside a red bauble-like shape. The linework is bold with soft shading on the needles and a red halo behind the star, all on a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Snow had sealed the Hollin pass by noon, and by dusk the Crooked Stile held three stranded carters, a widow with a goose under her arm, and a Christmas tree nobody had planned for. Mrs Agnes Trevick had dragged it in from the woodpile herself, its trunk wedged in a bucket of gravel, and now she stood back with her arms folded, daring it to topple.

"It wants a star," said Tom Pelling, the youngest carter, who had spent the afternoon up a stepladder stringing the candy canes the innkeeper's grandchildren had bent into hooks. Nothing in the house was quite right for the top, so he cut one from the lid of a biscuit tin and painted it gold with the last of the rector's enamel. Agnes turned it over in the lamplight and found her husband's initials scratched on the back, from the winter he had made the first one for her, long before the roof leaked and the sign faded.

By nine the lamps had guttered and the wind had found the chimney. The carters unwrapped the parcels they had been carrying for the Hollin children, brown paper tied with red string, and piled them beneath the branches, where the goose promptly tried to sit on them. Someone lit the tree's candles from the fire, and the baubles caught the light one by one, pink and plum and a glossy red that threw small coins of colour across the flagstones.

Tom reached up to straighten the star. Its painted edge caught the window glass and threw back the fire, and out in the drift a lantern answered it, then another, until the Hollin children's sledge came grinding up the lane with their fathers pulling on the ropes. Agnes tucked the biscuit star square and said nothing, and for once the house was full.
