Leopard print sleeve with flamingo and heels
Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
The sleeve shows a bold arrangement of objects over a leopard print pattern with small heart shapes. Pink flamingo, a green bow with spots, a red high-heeled shoe, a jar with a label and an arrow are outlined in dark lines. The colours are rich and saturated against the golden-brown background, and the design wraps around the upper arm and shoulder.

The fair came to Saltmarsh each September on the back of two lorries and a painted wagon. Nell Corrigan worked the hook-a-duck stall that year, and she was the only one who noticed that the flamingo kept in the tin bath behind the coconut shy had started to watch her.

Mrs Vane, who owned the wagon, came round at dusk with a green bow tied at her wrist and a jar in her other hand. "The bird wants out," she said. "And you want a pair of heels that will carry you past the last lamp on the common. Pay me with a true answer." Nell asked what the question was. Mrs Vane only tapped the jar, which had a paper label gone soft with damp and the word WATER still legible, and said the question was whether Nell would go, and the answer was yes.
Nell took the shoes, red as a fresh cut, with a bow on each strap like the one at Mrs Vane's wrist. She put them on at the gate. Behind her the spotted canvas of the big top rippled, and every spot lifted off the cloth as a small heart and drifted up into the dark. The flamingo climbed out of its bath, folded its long legs, and walked after her as far as the stile.
Nobody in Saltmarsh saw Nell again. In the morning an arrow was found standing in the church door, its fletching pink, and the common was empty except for a tin bath lying on its side in the ditch, full of rain and one green bow.
