Rose and leaves on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large open rose with a smaller bud and several layered leaves runs up the forearm. The petals are built from dense stippling and fine lines, which give soft tonal gradients across the flower. The design uses only black and grey ink, and the composition fills the forearm with the flower at the top and the leaves trailing downwards.

The peony by the schoolhouse wall at Coldharbour had leaves so dark they looked wet even in August, and it bloomed only once a year, on the morning of the Harvest Reunion. Nobody in the village could say who had planted it. The old folk said it had come up the spring the first pupil left for the mill towns, and that it grew one bud for every child who went after.

Maggie Holt came back on the early bus with a tin of sand in her coat pocket and a stiff new suit that pinched at the shoulders. She had not been home in nine years. At the wall she knelt in the wet grass and counted the buds, six of them, closed tight as fists. Her brother Tom had been the first to leave and had never come back, and she had brought his school jersey folded in the tin beneath the sand.

The reunion went on in the church hall with bad tea and sandwiches cut into triangles, and names were read from the old register. When the light turned gold Maggie walked back to the wall. The largest bud had split along one edge. She pressed the jersey's cuff against the stone, and the petals opened slowly, grey at the rims and black at the heart, as if someone patient had drawn them in ink.

Afterwards the schoolmistress told her the bush only opened for someone who had been missed. Maggie said nothing. She cut one leaf, wrapped it in the jersey, and caught the last bus back to Leeds with the empty tin on the seat beside her.
