Mandala tattoo down the ankle and foot
Dotwork · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A foot and lower leg are shown with a symmetrical mandala design of stacked lotus-like flowers, petal shapes and dotted rings. The linework and shading are built from fine stippled dots, with solid areas of grey giving depth to the petals. The ink is entirely black and grey, and the design is framed against a dark leather surface.

The lift in Harrow Point had been broken since March, so Mrs Adaeze Penhale climbed to the fourteenth floor each evening with a tin of pins and a bag of rice for the pigeons. Nobody on the estate asked her what she was doing. They had seen the stone lotus push up through the car park tarmac the week after the big frost, and they kept their questions to themselves.

On the concrete landing outside her flat she pressed pins into the render in rings, one dot for every night a neighbour had cried on the stairs and nobody had gone to them. Then she joined the dots with fine lines and filled the petals in grey, floor by floor, until the flowers stacked up the wall like a column of pale bells. The council man, Derek Mallin, came with his clipboard and wrote graffiti, to be removed. The rain came the next morning and the flowers were still there, darker for the wet.
That Friday Derek climbed the stairs himself with a spray tin. He found the landing full of petals and, at the centre of the nearest ring, a dot pressed deeper than the rest. It was the night his wife had left, eleven years back, and he had sat on those very steps until the milk float came. He sat down beside it and did not stand up until the sky over the car park had turned the colour of dishwater.
The lift was mended the following week, but people kept taking the stairs, counting the dots under their feet. Derek posted his clipboard in the bin by the bins and joined them. The flowers are still on the wall of Harrow Point, and if you stand on the fourteenth floor at dawn you can see the pigeons walking the rings like they know where they are going.
