Black linework lotus flowers and mandala-style patterns cover both lower legs, from below the knee towards the ankle, with a small vine at the ankle.

Lotus and mandala linework on both lower legs

Botanical · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

The image shows two lower legs covered in black linework tattoos of lotus-style flowers, leaves and scrolling patterns, with a mandala-like border of dots and fine lines near the knees. The lines are bold and even, and the dotted edges add texture, with no shading or colour. The design runs down both legs in a mirrored composition, ending near the ankle where a thin vine trails across the skin.

The frost came in the night like it always did in January, and by first light the north window of the calving shed had grown its flowers. Gran called them lotuses, though she had never seen one outside a book. Two heads of petals sat either side of the middle pane, opening towards each other and stopping at the frame, as if the cold had been sent to match them.

Dad had been in the bed upstairs since Michaelmas, and the vet came twice a week for the ewes because Owen would not leave the lambing pens. I did the morning round with a torch clamped in my teeth. Each day I checked the window before anything else, because the pattern shifted: a petal lost overnight, a new bead of white creeping out along the edge like a dot on a hem. Gran used to say the frost was counting something, and that we should count along with it.

On the twelfth morning the window was blank. Only grey water running down the glass in a thin line, curling at the bottom like a stem. Owen stood behind me with the bucket and said the heating had packed up in the night and the thaw had come early. I told him it was the lotus going over. He didn't laugh. We stood there until the water reached the sill and dripped into the feed trough, one drop, then another, in time with the ewes stamping in the straw.

Dad died that afternoon, quietly, with the radio on. Afterwards I went back to the shed and found the glass fogged over again, the frost starting at the corners and feeling its way inwards, two heads of petals opening towards each other. I left it alone and let it finish on its own.
