Chucky doll on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large tattoo of the Chucky doll character, showing a scarred face with wild hair, a fierce grin and staring eyes, with a "Good Guys" label on its bib overalls. Its arms are raised with long clawed fingers that extend beyond the frame of the figure, and dark streaks run down beneath it. The shading is detailed and smooth in black and grey, and the figure fills the frame against lightly freckled skin.

The Gull Rest boarding house smelled of brine and boiled cabbage, and the wallpaper in room seven had been peeling since the Coronation. You had been lodging there a fortnight when Mrs Pruett asked you, very politely, to carry a crate of bric-a-brac down from the loft before the removal men came on Thursday. Inside, beneath a sheet of yellowed newspaper, a doll lay face up with its arms folded, a cloth tag stitched to its dungarees reading GOOD GUYS in red thread.

You knew the face at once, though you had never seen it in a shop window. Hair the colour of old rope, a seam of stitches running from brow to jaw, one painted eye set slightly off true so it always seemed to be looking past your shoulder. Mrs Pruett said her late husband had bought it at a jumble in Margate and never let it out of the box. "It's been sulking," she said. "Put it by the back door, would you, love?"
That night the sea wind rattled the sash and you lay awake listening to the house tick. Near two o'clock you heard small, deliberate footsteps on the landing, then the scrape of the back door latch. In the morning the doll sat on the bottom stair with its arms raised high, as if it had been waiting to be lifted, and the kitchen door stood open on the empty yard.
Mrs Pruett didn't look up from her porridge. "He's taken a fancy to you," she said. "Give him a clean pair of socks and he'll mind the place while you're at work." When you glanced back at the stair, the doll had shifted one hand, and its long fingers were curled round the banister, as though it meant to climb.
