Red-haired clown with ruffled collar

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A bald clown with a bulbous red nose, red hair and a scowling expression fills the frame, wearing a teal and white striped ruffled collar. The linework is bold and dark, with painterly shading across the face and collar. Dark smoky shading surrounds the head, and warm orange and red tones run along the lower edge.

The Duke of Marrowmere has sent for a new jester, and the post is yours by default, because the last one ran off into the marsh with the silver spoons and nobody else would take the red wig. You arrive at the palace gate with a carpetbag, a pot of greasepaint and a collar of teal silk you stitched yourself over three nights, every pleat folded so tight it could slice paper. The guards laugh until they see your face under the paint. Then they stop laughing and open the gate.

Inside, the court is grey. The duke's daughter has not smiled since the summer the river froze, and the chancellor counts his coins twice before every meal. You try the usual tricks: the bladder on a stick, the egg that vanishes into a boot. Nothing moves them. On the seventh night you climb to the north tower, where the smoke from the lower kitchens rises thick and blue, and you find the old jester's ledger hidden in a cold hearth. Its last page says only: Make them laugh at the hour the smoke turns orange, or the mill goes under.

You understand then that the smoke was never from cooking. Each evening the chancellor burns the mill ledgers to hide his debts, and the whole valley breathes it. So at dusk you climb onto the long table in the great hall, squeeze your red nose until it honks, and tell the court the only joke you know that is true: a man who counts his coins twice is hiding something under the bread. The chancellor's scowl cracks down the middle. The daughter laughs until she has to hold her ribs, and the sound rolls out over the orange smoke, down the hill, to the mill where the wheel, at last, begins to turn.
