Circuit board tree on upper back
Blackwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A person with short dark hair is shown from behind, with a black tattoo across the upper back that resembles a tree drawn as a circuit board. Branching lines end in small open circles, and the trunk splits into several parallel tracks running down towards the lower back. The close-up panel shows the lines built from fine dots, and the image is entirely black and grey against a plain, softly lit background.

Day nine of the survey, and the valley still refuses to behave like a map. Mr Ashby wanted the hollow above Coldharbour Farm marked as flat ground for the new cable run, but the alders there grow in lines that follow the water table as neatly as solder follows a pad. I have walked the same ridge four times now, counting branches and writing the numbers in the back of this book, because the numbers keep coming out the same and I don't trust them.

This morning I found the old lightning-struck oak at the top of the bank, the one the villagers call Sorrel's Tree. Half its crown is gone, and what remains splits into fine forks, each one ending in a small open ring where a bough has rotted back to a hollow knot. The trunk divides into four pale seams that run down the bark toward the roots like traces routed under a board. I pressed my palm to the wood and felt nothing but cold, yet the pattern beneath it looked so deliberate that I laughed out loud, alone in a field, like a fool.
I have stopped trying to explain the valley to Ashby. I have drawn the oak instead, every ring and seam, and pinned the sheet inside the cover of this notebook. Tomorrow I will tell him the hollow is sound ground. He will not ask me how I know, and I will not offer to show him the tree.
