Swirling henna tree on a calf
Botanical · Calf · Colour · Photo
A tree is drawn in brown henna on the outer calf, with a trunk that splits into roots at the base and a crown of spiralling, curled branches. The linework is an even, continuous line of uniform width, with no shading. The design is centred on the leg against a green lawn, and the henna appears to be a temporary stain rather than a permanent tattoo.

You grind the leaves before dawn because a paste ground in haste will fade to the colour of weak tea, and Mother Ashra has never let you forget it. By the time the sun clears the wall the bowl is full of green-black mud that smells of crushed grass and rain. The river is loud with spring melt beyond the courtyard, and you have not yet washed the stain from your wrists.

The stranger arrives at noon carrying a cloth bundle and a wooden cup carved with a tree whose branches curl back on themselves like fern heads. He has no coin. He asks instead for the tree that grows on the hill above the salt pans, the one nobody in Harrah-Sul has managed to draw twice the same. You say you cannot paint what you have not seen. He says you have seen it, every time you close your eyes to rest your hands. You do not argue, because it is true.
You work with a reed brush, keeping the line unbroken, because Mother Ashra says a lifted brush lets the tree forget where it was going. The crown spirals out in loops, the trunk thickens, and at the base the roots spread and split like fingers feeling for water. When you finish he sits on the step while the paste dries to a dark bronze. He does not thank you. He only nods at the roots as if counting them.
He leaves at dusk. In the morning the wooden cup is on your shelf, and a single curled shoot has pushed through the seam of the wood, pale green and no longer than your smallest finger. Outside the gate, pressed into the damp dust where he stood, is the print of a bare foot, and from its heel a fine brown root runs down the road towards the salt pans.
