Two cat silhouettes on upper back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of two black cat silhouettes sitting side by side, facing each other, on the upper back near the shoulder blade. The design is solid black with no visible shading or fine linework, set against pale skin on a dark background. The composition is centred on the tattoo with a black strap top and choker framing the shoulder.

Dear Mrs Ashdown,

I hope you won't mind a letter rather than a knock on the door. Since the lift went out in March I have been taking the stairs to the fourteenth floor twice a day, and on the landing by the bin chute I keep seeing your two. Smoke and Tallow, I think you call them, though neither has ever answered to anything I have tried.
They sit on the low wall of the walkway the way an old married couple sits on a bench, shoulder to shoulder but angled so each can watch the other. Every evening they face in, tails curled round their feet, as if they have settled an argument and are waiting for the other to admit it. I have started waiting for them too. Last Tuesday I left a tin of sardines on the wall with the lid peeled back, and by the time I came down again they had cleared it and were washing their faces in the same rhythm.
Ron Feeney on the eleventh floor says they belong to the flats on the north side and I should leave them be. Ron also says the council will fix the lift by Easter, so I am not sure what to make of him. What I do know is that Tallow stops on the landing when I pass, looks up at me with those yellow eyes, and then turns back to his friend as if I have been dismissed.
Could you tell them the stairs are still there if the lift stays broken, and that I have plenty of sardines? And if Smoke ever wants to come in out of the wet, the kitchen window latch sticks, but it opens.
Yours faithfully, Walter Brennan, flat 14C
