Circular mountain and tree landscape on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A circular landscape tattoo shows a mountain on the left, a bare branching tree in the centre and a sun or moon above, with horizontal lines suggesting sky and dotted ground below. The linework is fine and mostly unshaded, with some stippling and light hatching on the mountain and ground. The design is in black ink only and sits neatly within the circle on the inside of the upper arm.

Sit down, you lot, and mind the lamp, because this is the story of the Marrowgate lighthouse keeper's daughter and the bare tree that grew out of the cliff above Skerra Bay. Everyone on the Ilse knows the tree, though none of you have seen it, since it only shows itself to people who have stopped looking for it. Aggie Pell swore it was there every morning she hung washing on the rail, a thin black thing with its arms out like a woman refusing to be carried.

She had a rope of her own to pay out that winter. Her father had gone over the side off the Torvald reef with a lantern in his fist, and the cliff path was the only road to the village, so she walked it every Sunday with a loaf under her arm and a hymn she never finished. On the third Sunday of the thaw the sun came up behind the mountain, the one they call the Grey Shoulder, and it sat on the sea like a coin someone had forgotten to pick up. She stopped by the tree to get her breath, and the tree said nothing, which was the first honest thing anyone had said to her in a month.
She didn't climb the mountain. Nobody has ever climbed the Grey Shoulder and come back talking sense. What she did was sit down under the bare branches and eat the loaf, crumb by crumb, watching the moon hang over the water like a lost button. When she walked home the light was on in the tower, lit by her own hand, and she has kept it lit since. That's the tale. Now bank that fire, and somebody fetch me my pipe.
