Circular script quote on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot and ankle rest on a wooden floor, with a thin black tattoo of a phrase in handwritten script arranged in a circle around the ankle. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the lettering runs upside down in places as it follows the curve. The photograph is in black and white, so the composition focuses on the tattoo and the shape of the ankle.

Mind the puddle by the fish stall, the lot of you, and sit where the awning drips least, because this is a long one and I'm not telling it twice. Rain like this, with the stalls shuttered and the gutters singing, is when the old tale comes out. Listen.

Ned Corrigan sold lamp oil and bad news, and one wet February he walked the ring road round Harrowgate and found he couldn't leave it. Every lane bent back to the start. Every gate opened onto the same hedge and the same chapel with the cracked bell. On the third day a woman selling eels from a barrow looked up and said, 'You've been going round like a dog after its tail, love.' Her barrow board carried a circle of words in thin handwriting, and she tapped them with a wet finger. The only way out is through, it said, and it said it again, all the way round.
Ned said he'd sooner starve than walk into that hedge, so he sat on the kerb and sulked until the rain turned to sleet. Maud, for that was the eel woman's name, had no patience for sulkers. She gave him tea and a stale bun and said the ring was only a ring if he kept staring at the edge. Look at the middle, she said. Ned looked. There was nothing in the middle but wet cobbles and his own shadow.
So he stood, shut his eyes, and walked straight at the hedge. He came out on the square with the bell ringing noon. Maud was gone, and the barrow stood there with its board turned face down. Some say the words are still written on the underside. Mind your step going out, and don't look back at the hedge, for it's still raining.
