Script quote on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey photograph of a fine line script tattoo reading Never a failure always a lesson, running along the inner forearm. The letters are thin, even and flowing, with a looped capital N and simple shading. The arm rests across the other wrist, which wears a metal wristwatch, on a weathered wooden table, with the subject's dark hair at the top of the frame.

The wheel stops on the fourth night, and you are the one sent up the ladder with a spanner in your back pocket, because you are the smallest and the least likely to be missed. Dad says the Big Wheel has been stuck since Carlisle, though it is barely forty feet across and its paint has gone the colour of old teeth. Below you the generator coughs, the ticket queue shuffles, and somebody's child starts crying for candyfloss that has run out.

The brake band is seized with rust and grit. You work it loose with your knuckles bleeding, and while you wait for the gondola to swing level you look at the board above the booth, lettered in gold leaf by Mr Pargeter, who painted every ride on the circuit before his hands began to shake. He did the swirling capitals on everything, the Waltzer, the Octopus, the Cakewalk. Over the ticket hatch he wrote a line nobody reads: Never a failure, always a lesson. You used to think it was a hymn stuck on a fairground, put up to make the punters feel better about losing their pennies.
When the wheel finally groans into motion, the whole field seems to lean with it. You ride the top alone, the lights of the Dodgems spinning like spilt sweets below, and you remember Mr Pargeter's old pocket watch hanging on a nail in the caravan where Dad keeps the cash tin. It has stopped at a quarter past two. Tomorrow you will wind it and set it by the church clock in the next town, and then you will know exactly how long you have been running.
