Wave inside a circle on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small circular tattoo shows a curling wave with crest spray at its top, set against an open background within the circle. The linework is fine and the wave is built up with hatching and dense dot shading for tonal depth. The tattoo is in black ink only, placed on pale skin against a plain white background with black fabric at the left edge.

Dad, the petrol pump at Salt Wick has been dead since Tuesday, so I've been sitting on the step with a flask and nothing to do but look at the road. It runs straight out past the wire fence and the dried-up lake bed until the heat folds it up like a wet letter. Nobody has driven past in two days except a man in a van who only wanted to know if the cafe served eggs.

I found your old brass compass in the glovebox of the Land Rover. The glass is cracked across the north. I held it up to the light the way you used to and thought about the ship's cook who told you that a wave is just the sea trying to stand up straight for a moment before it falls over. You said that to me when I was six and I believed it for years.
Then I thought about the round tin lid on the shelf inside, the one with the wave hammered into it, the crest flicking out like a cat's tongue. I've scrubbed it, and I've been looking at the curl of it every morning while the kettle goes. It's the only thing in this place that moves like water.
The pump man rang this afternoon. He says the lorry will bring the part on Thursday if the bridge at Dunmore holds. I told him I'd wait. Come home when your boat's in, and I'll show you how the lid still shines in the right light, and you can tell me again that the wave is only the sea standing up.
