Mrs Oake sat in the doorway with a colander of plums on her knee. She had lost most of her words two winters back, but she tapped a tuning fork against her good knee before I had even found my spanner, as if she meant to do the work herself.

I took the fork from her, struck it on my elbow the way my father taught me, and pressed the stem to the wood. A to A. The strings came round one by one, the felt hammers ticking back into place. By the fourth hour the room smelt of sweet rot and paraffin, and the light had crept off the floorboards onto the wall, where a pencil line marked a child's height with dates beside it.

When the last octave settled, she lifted her hand, laid it flat on the keys and pressed one note with a knuckle. It came out thin and bright and a little flat, nothing like a song. She looked at me, then at the window full of apple trees, and I understood she meant that this was enough.
