Heart wrapped in musical staff and notes
Mixed · Photo
A red heart with pink and deep red shading sits at the centre of the design, with black musical staff lines and notes wrapping around it. A faded purple staff with a treble clef appears behind the top of the heart, and a second staff curls below it. The black outlines are clean and the colour is softly blended across the heart.

Sit closer, the lot of you, the wind up here has teeth and there's no roof left to argue with it. Mind the stair. Nine steps are still standing and the tenth went into the moat in my grandfather's day. Now. You'll have heard of Harl the lutenist, who played the great hall at Corrow before the fire took the roof. What you haven't heard is what he carried inside his coat.

He carried a song that wouldn't sit still. Five lines of it, ruled in ink on a scrap of calfskin, and every line bent round a red heart he'd drawn in the margin, because the miller's girl Wenna had laughed at him when he said a tune could be shaped like anything. She could not read a note. So each evening he climbed the east tower, where the lines of the old staff still show in the mortar, and sang her the rise and fall of it while she counted on her fingers and told him he was flat.
Then the lord sent for him to play at Corrow, and he went, and he sang so sweetly the old man wept into his cup and hung a silver chain on him. Harl came home over the moor in the rain and found the mill dark. Wenna had gone to the coast with a tinker, and the calfskin was nailed to the tower door, its notes flapping like gulls.
They say that on a still night you can stand in that tower and hear the tune in the wind, cut off where the sheet ends, and a woman's voice finishing the last bar a little flat, the way she always did. Drink up. The wind's come round again.
