The piano at Gull Rest had not been tuned since the war, and it sulked in the front parlour like a relation nobody wanted at Christmas. Mrs Pargeter kept it for the guests on wet Sundays, and I was the only lodger who would sit down to it. Dorothy said I played the way the sea came in, all at once and then sorry for itself.

The trouble was the notation. Old Mr Venn had left a folder of hymns on the stand, and every page began with two signs at the start of the stave, one curled like a question and the other a fat hook with two dots after it, as if someone had sneezed on the paper. I asked Mrs Pargeter what they meant. She said the top was for the high notes, the bottom for the low, and the dots were for people who could not decide which they were.

I spent a week with a pencil working out where my hands should go, the left down in the cellar of the page and the right up in the attic. By Thursday the fog had come in off the harbour and stayed, and the foghorn at the point hit the same flat note every forty seconds. I found I could put it in the middle of a tune and nobody complained.

On the last night of Mr Venn's folder I played the whole thing through, both clefs at once, with the window rattling in its frame. When I finished, the lamp in the hall had gone out, and someone was standing in the dark doorway, humming the bottom line back at me a half beat behind.
