Treble clef and heartbeat line on the wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A treble clef flows into a heartbeat trace that runs across the inner forearm, with the script lettering Where words fail music speaks set beneath it. The linework is thin and even in solid black ink, with no shading or colour. The design is centred on the forearm close to the wrist, shot against a dark background under low light.

Sit down, the lot of you, the 7.14 is running late again and Mr Pryce won't ring the bell until he's had his tea. Now, Cyril Fenn was signalman at Hollin Junction for thirty-one years, and in all that time he never once said a proper word to the stationmaster that wasn't about points or coal.

His wife Edie had the opposite trouble. She talked enough for the pair of them, to the wireless, the kettle and the milkman. Then the telegram came about their boy Tom, and for a fortnight the house on Mill Row was so quiet you could hear the clock lose its place. Cyril went to work and came home and sat with his hands on his knees, saying nothing at all.

It was Edie who noticed the upright piano in the waiting room had been left unlocked. She carried Tom's old music book down to the platform on a wet Tuesday, sat on the cracked stool and picked out the first line of a hymn she'd known since she was six, one finger at a time. Cyril heard it from the signal box doorway, a note he knew, then the next. Before the 4.10 came through he was humming the tune under his breath, and the wheels seemed to keep time with him.

Word got round. When the line reopened after the floods, a crate of sheet music was waiting on the platform with no name on it, only a pencil treble clef drawn on the lid. Cyril never did become a talker. He didn't need to. Every morning after that he hung the signal lamp and gave the first long whistle of the day, and the passengers said it sounded like someone counting in.
