Steam locomotive and pocket watch on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A detailed steam locomotive dominates the upper arm, with a large pocket watch showing Roman numerals in the lower section. A faded map and a small biplane sit in the background at the top of the design. The work uses fine shading and soft grey tones with no colour ink, and the image is taken from the side against a dark background.

Old Hamid kept the engine that ran the cut-off line across the salt flats, and he kept it by his father's watch. Every morning the watch was wound on the cab step before the boiler was lit, and every morning its numbers were checked against the sun. The map on the depot wall showed the line as a single black thread, with the wells marked in red and the road beside it marked with nothing at all.

The year the aeroplane came down on the flats, a pilot with a burnt cheek walked along the rails for two days with a dead compass. Hamid gave him water and a seat in the cab. The pilot asked why anyone would burn coal to haul sand, and Hamid said the sand was not the cargo. The cargo was the timetable, because a town three hundred miles off needed to know when the mail would come.

They ran the last stretch by night, the firebox door open, the pilot singing a song about a girl in Lyon. At the sixth well the watch stopped. Hamid did not swear. He opened the case, eased the balance wheel back with his fingernail, and blew on it. It ran again, and the train came into Tamsah eleven minutes late, the only lateness anyone there remembered.

The pilot sent a postcard the next spring, a biplane above the flats with a line of cloud beneath it. Hamid pinned it beside the map, below the red marks, and wound the watch that morning as he always did.
