The watch had stopped at twenty to four the morning Tomas pressed it into my hand, and he would not let me wind it until we reached the top of the Col de Vasc. Snow was already sliding off the ridge in grey sheets. The mules knew the path better than either of us, so I kept my eyes on their rumps and let the silver case knock against my ribs under my coat.

Under the cracked glass the face was black at the edges, the numerals worn pale, the hands once gold and now the colour of tea. Someone had pressed a red rose into the back of the case, its petals gone the shade of rust, and when I held it to the lantern the scrolled frame curled around the dial like frost on a fern. Tomas had carried it since his brother died on this pass. It had never once been wrong about the weather, he said, only about the people who trusted it.

We reached the summit at what the sky agreed was noon. I wound the crown until it resisted, then opened the case. The tick came up small and bright, and Tomas laughed the way men laugh when they have waited a long time to be proved foolish. He took the watch back, set it on a cairn facing the valley, and told me to walk on.

I did not look back. Behind me the little tick kept going, the only thing on that mountain still keeping the hour.
