Clock, skull and wing shoulder tattoo
Realism · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo covers the shoulder and upper arm in a split, mirrored composition. A clock face with Roman numerals sits at the top, with a grey skull, a large feathered white wing, a row of white stars on a dark field and bold lettering reading 2nd Amendment below. The shading is smooth and greyscale in the skull and feathers, with loose red splashes and dark brushed strokes around the edges.

Dear Ruth,

The clock in the lamp room stopped again on Tuesday, the same hour as the storm, so I have been winding it by hand every four hours like a man keeping a promise to a dead wife. The brass key is worn to a shine where my thumb goes. The Board sent a man out in the spring with a box of spare springs, but he went back on the last boat without fitting one, saying the mainland would send the right part once it had a mind to.
Yesterday the tide left a skull on the landing stage, bleached and whole except for one cheekbone, and I carried it up to the store and set it on the shelf beside the oil cans. I know it was a seal or some poor gannet's head. It still looked at me as though it had opinions about the state of the place. This morning a gannet came down on the rail, one wing folded wrong where the bone had knitted badly, and it stood there watching the lamp turn until I thought it might speak.
Last night I counted stars off the gallery for the logbook, because the logbook asks for visibility and I had nothing else to write. I got to forty-one before the cloud came in across the Skerry like a sheet over furniture. The flag on the mast has a split in it and I never got round to taking it down, so it hung there in the dark, stripes and all, slapping against nothing.
I am sending the key with this letter. Wind it if the mechanism sticks, and mind the third stair, which still gives under a boot.
Your brother, Tom
