Sugar skull woman and rose sleeve
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo covers the upper arm and shoulder with a sugar skull woman whose face is painted with ornate patterns, with a large rose above her head. Below, an hourglass, a clock face and a cracked skull are shaded in smooth greys with strong contrast. The image is a close photograph of the arm against a striped top and a pale wall, with the tattoo as the clear focus.

Dear Inés,

The clock in the arcade has stopped again, so I have started timing my nights by the church bells across the river, which are always two minutes late and never sound quite like they did when Papa was alive. I walked back from the market in the rain tonight with the rose you sent me pinned under my collar so it would not crush. It is still blooming, a little paler now, and it smells of your kitchen more than I expected.
I have been working for Señor Acevedo at the print shop on Calle Vega, painting faces on paper for the festival. He wants skulls with sugar lace across the cheeks, always the same woman, always looking past the viewer as if she has heard her name called from another room. Last week he asked me to paint the hourglass beneath her, the sand already half gone. I told him that is bad luck. He laughed and said the sand does not care what we believe.
Here is the strange part. Yesterday a man came in with a cracked skull drawn on a scrap of card and asked whether I could make the crack run exactly where his grandfather's had. He said it was the only way his grandfather would know him. I did not ask what had happened to the grandfather. I only mixed the grey.
Tonight the clock on the shop wall finally stopped at a quarter past eleven, the hour the rain began. I have decided to leave it that way until you visit. Write back soon, and tell me the sand is still running in your town.
