Clothes hanger tattoo on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a wrist showing a small, thin black outline of a clothes hanger. The linework is simple and even, with no shading, and the ink sits against warm skin. A silver chain bracelet sits just above the tattoo, and a cream knit sweater sleeve and blue denim fill the soft-focus background.

Mrs Okonedo had pinned the ticket to the hanger before Dan could say anything, which was how he knew she meant the order to stand. Ten past six on a Friday, the shutter halfway down, and the wire hanger from the back of the rail was the only one she would accept. "Not the wooden ones," she said. "The wire holds a shoulder better."

He took it down and found a kink near the hook, the sort a thumb puts in when someone has been turning it over in a hurry. Dan had worked the counter at Shoreview Cleaners for eleven months and knew most of the hangers by their bends. This one had a tuft of faded blue thread caught on the neck, the same blue that had come off a cream jumper on the sorting table that morning.
He eased the wire straight with the pliers from the drawer and found a card tucked inside the hook, soft as cloth. Written in pencil: Bell, A. Navy two-piece. Collect Monday. The date beside it was 1979. Mr Pryce had said the back rail was cleared years ago, but nobody had ever checked it properly.
Mrs Okonedo read the card twice and laughed, one short sound. Her father had hung his Sunday suit on that hanger, she said, and Mr Bell had been a customer who never came back for his. She had kept the hanger because she could not bear to throw out something that still remembered the shape of a shoulder.
Dan laid the jumper over the wire. The shoulders settled into place and the hook ticked softly against the rail. "Collect Monday," she said, and wrote the date on a fresh ticket anyway.
