Small birds in flight on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of two or three birds in flight sits on the inner wrist and forearm. The lines are thin and the birds are mostly solid dark ink with soft edges, with some light shading on their wings. The image is a close, slightly angled photo with a grey pavement background and a white lace dress, a gold bracelet and brown boots in the frame.

The reunion was held in the sports hall of our old school, and by nine o'clock the balloons had started to sag under the basketball hoops. I remembered them because Marnie said the birds were leaving us for Africa, and she wanted to be the one who saw them go.

We found each other by the crisps and the warm lemonade. She had not changed much, except her laugh, which still arrived a second before the joke. "You kept the roof hatch?" she asked, and I said I had kept the memory of it, the one we used to climb through to watch the swifts stitch the evening together over the playing fields. She told me her brother had been caught on it, and the caretaker had nailed it shut. We agreed that was a crime against the sky.
Later, when the DJ played something from our childhood and half the room groaned, we went out to the car park to breathe. The air smelled of cut grass and diesel. Marnie pushed up her sleeve to show me the small birds inked on her wrist, wings lifted as if they had only just left a branch. "Every year I come back and check that roof," she said. "Watching them go is the only part of school I was ever sure about."
Above the floodlights, a pair of swifts cut across the dusk. We stood with our necks bent back until the lights came on and the sky drained out of the car park.
