Small fine-line mark on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, thin black line drawing sits on the inner forearm near the wrist, resembling a stylised letter or abstract symbol. The linework is delicate and even, with no shading, and the ink is black against the skin. The photograph is taken at close range with a plain white jumper and a silver bracelet framing the mark.

Ruth Pardoe had been painting shop signs on Hale Street for thirty-one years, and in all that time she had signed her work with only a single stroke. It was not a letter, though people kept asking. It began low, dipped, and came back on itself like a swallow turning over the harbour wall. She used a number one sable and a pot of lamp black, and she never lifted the brush twice.

Her apprentice, Dev, thought it was affectation until the winter the gilt on the Anchor Inn board cracked in the frost and the landlord rang to say he wanted the whole thing redone by Saturday. Ruth sent him up the ladder with the size and the leaf and told him to work the lettering while she did the scrolls. He made a mess of the first B. She didn't shout. She took the brush from him, loaded it, and drew the stroke in the bottom corner of the board where nobody would think to look.
'That's your name, then,' he said. 'Your mark.'
'It's a stroke,' she said. 'Marks are for people who want to be found. A stroke is for the hand that did the work.' She wiped her fingers on a rag and climbed down to check the level of the sign against the pole.
On Saturday the Anchor opened under its new gold letters, and nobody noticed the small black line in the corner except Dev, who stood under it long after the last customer had gone inside. Then he took out his own brush, loaded it with more care than he had ever shown, and drew one stroke beside hers.
