Crescent moon with vines on an ankle
Botanical · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A foot rests on white satin sheets, showing a black and grey tattoo of a crescent with curling vines and a small flower at the top. The linework is thin and delicate, with soft grey shading that gives the crescent some depth. Soft natural light falls across the skin and fabric, and a thin gold chain anklet sits on the lower leg.

The moon had snagged itself on the blackthorn again, its curved horn caught among the thorns, and the vines that climbed the orchard wall were twisting round it as if they meant to keep it. Nan had always said the moon needed pruning like anything else that grew too wild. I had not believed her until I found a small white flower opening at its tip, one nobody in Hollin Cross had ever seen before.

I climbed the ladder with the shears tucked in my apron and the lantern hooked to my belt. The vines were cool and damp and smelled of wet slate. Each cut sent a note up through the branches like a bell struck under water, and the sky, which had been black, went faintly grey at the edges where the moon was thinning. I worked until my fingers stung, lifting the tendrils one at a time away from the silver, and when the last one fell the moon swung free and rang softly against the stones.
Nan was waiting at the gate with a shawl around her shoulders. "You've kept the flower," she said, not as a question. I told her it had only been a flower. She shook her head and pressed a dried sprig into my palm, grey-green and light as ash. "That's the part that remembers you," she said. "Keep it close. The moon will know where to find you if you ever want pruning again."
That night I pinned the sprig inside my coat, and for the first time since the spring I slept through till morning. When I went out to the orchard the moon was pale in the window, a clean crescent with nothing tangled round it. The vines had gone quiet along the wall, and where the ladder had stood a single white flower was opening in the frost.
