Clouds and typewriter quote on an arm
Lettering · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A horizontal band of soft blue and pink clouds, shaded to resemble a watercolour wash, runs across the arm. A line of black typewriter-style text sits across the centre, reading heaven's got a plan for you, with the opening word partly faded. The blue tones fade into the skin at the edges while the pink patches sit toward the middle, against a dark background.

The big top had been patched so many times that the sky over the ring was more canvas than sky, and Mr Ashdown wanted it repainted before the autumn fair at Pemberton. He gave me a tin of blue, a tin of rose and a brush worn down to a stub, and told me to paint clouds the way his late wife had, thin and wet, so the colour bled out at the edges like tea soaking into a napkin.

The only machine left on the lorry was a black portable typewriter with a sticking e. Every night after the last house I sat under the bare bulb in the wardrobe tent, typing the banner copy while Ashdown paced and dictated, because he never wrote anything down. Most nights it was the same line, the one Elsie used to call across the sawdust when the stands emptied and the children were slow to leave: heaven's got a plan for you. I typed it until the ribbon went grey and the e bit through the paper.
The wagons went to a farm outside Stroud that November, and the tent was sold for scrap by the metre. Ashdown kept the typewriter and took a job selling tickets in a car park in Swindon. I got a postcard from him at Christmas with no message on it, only a smudge of blue ink in one corner where the brush had been resting on the card. The banner had gone into a skip with the rest, so I never did see whether the first word had faded or whether I had simply stopped reading it that way.
