The wizard came down Cordwainer Lane the night the gas failed, and his two dragons came with him, one on either side, their tails dragging through the wet gutters like hawsers. Nobody had sent for him. The chandler's wife, Ada Prothero, saw him pass her shuttered window and said afterwards that his pointed hat was so tall it scraped the lintel of the post office, and that he never once looked up at the chimneys where the sparrows slept.

He stopped at the corner where the lamp post leaned like a drunk man. The eastern dragon lowered its long head and sniffed the iron, then the western one did the same, and they both made a low sound the street remembered for years, like a cart crossing a bridge. The wizard asked the watchman for a ladder. The watchman, who had been paid in coal for twelve winters and nothing since, gave him the ladder without a word.

What the wizard did up there nobody could say exactly. The dragons wound their tails around the lamp posts, one post to the next, until the whole length of Cordwainer Lane was strung together like beads on a thread. The street lit from end to end, not yellow but a clean blue-white that made the cobbles look wet even when they were dry.

In the morning the wizard was gone, and so were the dragons, but the tails stayed where they were. People still walk that lane at night and say the lamps hum a little, and that if you stand under the leaning post long enough you can hear something breathing in the iron.
