Cocktail, palm tree and flamingo tattoo
Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo
A cocktail glass sits at the centre, topped with a pineapple wedge, a cherry, a small umbrella and two striped straws. A green palm tree, a pink flamingo and a pink plumeria flower with green leaves fill the space around it. Bold black outlines carry the flat colour fills, with red, orange, yellow, green and pink dominating, and the design is shown in a close-up photo against a pink background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Mrs Pardoe charged you a shilling extra for the deckchair, and you paid it without a word, because the bar at the end of the Lido pier was the only place in Margate that still made the drink you wanted. Dusk came in pink over the groyne. Teddy, the barman, a long-armed man who had once dived for the harbour board, slid a tall glass across the zinc with a pineapple wedge balanced on its rim, a cherry sunk in the crushed ice, and a little paper umbrella that had seen better summers.

Two striped straws leaned together in the glass like a pair of gossips. Out on the sand, a fairground flamingo had slipped its painted pole and was stalking the tideline with great dignity, pausing now and then to consider the chips. A woman at the next stool had a hibiscus behind her ear and a pile of plumeria petals on her napkin, and she kept rolling them between her fingers as if she was deciding something. Teddy said the palm in the tub by the door had been planted the summer the pier opened, and nobody believed him, and nobody argued.
You had meant to tell Mrs Pardoe that morning that you were catching the early train to Grimsby, that the cannery had written at last, and that the room would be empty by Friday. You had the envelope in your coat. Instead you sat with the glass sweating under your palm and watched the flamingo give up on the chips and walk back toward the carousel.
When you finally stood, the umbrella was still up, the cherry was still bobbing, and the tide had already taken the footprints you had left on the wet boards.
