The pass at Cuesta Negra opens before dawn, and the mule has already decided it will not climb another step. You crouch in the frost with the crate between your knees, the pineapple on top wrapped in a sack that still smells of the coast three days behind you. Old Teodoro says it is the altitude that makes animals stubborn, not the load. You do not believe him, but you do not argue either.

The fruit was meant for Doña Marisol's wedding feast in the valley below, a gift from her brother who works the cargo boats out of the port. He wrapped it in a yellow scarf and told you it was the sun in a box. You laughed at that then. Now, with the sky paling over the ridge and the first thin sun pushing red through the cloud, you unwrap it and set it on a flat stone so the mule can see it.

The mule lifts its head. Something about the crown, spiked and blue-green like a fistful of rushes, makes it step forward onto the path. You lead it up the last switchback with the sun climbing behind you, its rays laid across the scree like the spokes of a cartwheel. By the time the pass levels, your coat is open and the cold has given up.

At the summit a shepherd's boy waits with a flask of mint tea. He asks what you carry. You tell him the truth: a pineapple, a sun, and a mule with opinions. He laughs and points down the far slope, where the valley is already gold. "Then you are early," he says. You are not sure he means the wedding, or the day.
