Cocktail and flowers on a calf

Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a purple and pink cocktail in a glass with a striped straw, a cherry, and a yellow pineapple slice on the rim. Two flowers, one pink and one orange, and green and teal leaves fill the space around the base of the glass. Bold black outlines and flat, solid colour fills in purple, pink, yellow, teal and green give it a classic, graphic look, and the design is centred on the calf.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Anselm had been told to produce something for the summer fête that would neither scandalise the bishop nor empty the parish coffers, and by ten o'clock on the Friday he had tried three syrups and was losing faith in all of them. The blackcurrant tasted of hymn books. The elderflower tasted of nothing whatsoever, which Abbot Thomas said was the least sinful option available to them.

The pineapple came from a tin in the storeroom, bought for a Christmas cake nobody had got round to making. Brother Dunstan produced a jar of glacé cherries from the back of the pantry, a bendy paper straw left over from the hospice bake sale, and a fluted goblet from the refectory cupboard that had once belonged to the abbot's mother. The purple came from crushed damsons and a drop of pink icing colour that Dunstan swore had been donated for good purposes.

At two o'clock, beside the tombola, a woman from the village took a sip, closed her eyes and announced that it was the best thing she had tasted since a week in Benidorm in 1987. She wanted the recipe. Anselm opened his notebook and found that he had written down every ingredient but none of the quantities, because he had been making it by feel, by colour and by whether Dunstan was looking.

He poured a second glass without measuring it, slid the cherry onto the rim beside the pineapple, and carried it across the lawn to the abbot, who was standing very upright by the tea urn and pretending he had not been watching. The teal glass caught the afternoon sun. Thomas took it, sniffed it with great suspicion, and said nothing at all, which Anselm had learned was the highest praise the house could give.
