Coexist lettering with symbols on the wrist
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a hand and inner wrist showing a small tattoo that spells the word Coexist. Several letters are replaced by symbols: a peace sign, a Mars or male symbol, a Star of David, a yin yang and a Latin cross, with a small circled star near the top. The black ink is crisp and solid on the pale skin, and the image is a black and white photo against a blurred background of branches.

Dear Ruth,

The sign went up on Thursday, painted by Mr Abrahams on the back of an old tea board, and you should have heard the argument it started. Father Keane said the cross had to come first. Mrs Lowther wanted the peace mark because her boy came home from Korea with nothing to say. Mr Abrahams only asked that the star go where the light from the fanlight fell. We settled it over three bottles of Tizer and a plate of Mrs Patel's samosas, which nobody admitted to liking and everybody ate.
So now the hall on Crescent Road reads COEXIST above the stage, and the letters are a bit of a muddle, like a family photograph where everyone moved at once. The E and the X are plain enough. The O is a ring of peace marks someone drew with a compass. The yin and yang sits where the I should be, with a small star beside it that the Ashworth girl insisted was a sheriff's badge, and she would not be argued out of it.
Last Saturday the Carlton Five played and the floor filled with everyone at once: the lads from the mill, the Methodists in their Sunday shoes, Mr Abrahams doing a very correct foxtrot with his wife, the Patel twins jiving badly by the urn. Nobody asked whose letter they were standing under.
I stood by the sign at midnight while the lights came down and read it the wrong way round, the way you used to read the bus timetable. Cross, star, circle, peace. It still spells the same thing, Ruth. Come home in June and see for yourself.
Yours, Dot
