Black fine line script lettering, apparently the word enough, on the inner wrist and forearm of a person with a red and grey string bracelet.

Fine line script word on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a single word written in thin, flowing script on the inner wrist, with the letters appearing to read enough. The linework is delicate and even, with minimal shading and the ink appearing dark grey to black against the skin. The word runs diagonally across the wrist, with a softly blurred green and grey background and a red and grey bracelet visible at the lower left.

The toll-keeper at Ashby Ford had taken coin from carters and drovers for thirty years, and he had never once been asked what a thing was worth. So when the miller's wife came down the bank at dusk with a sack on each shoulder, he set down his lamp and waited for her to name her price.

She named it in barley. Then in the good copper pot, then in the brass clock her mother had carried from Lincoln, then in the ring she turned round and round on her finger before she slid it onto the ledger. Every time he said the toll was paid, she shook her head and offered more. Her husband had gone over the water three months since to find work in the mills beyond, she said, and the crossing was the only thing between her and him. Let her pay what it cost. Let her owe nothing after.

The keeper had a rule his own father left him, cut in oak above the door of the toll house: enough. He had always taken it for a warning about greed. Now he read it differently. He took the sack of barley and no more, and the pot and the clock stayed in her arms. He pushed the ring back across the desk with one finger.

She stood a long while under the lamp. Then she shouldered her empty load, walked back up the bank, and the river kept running under the bridge, carrying nothing that belonged to her.
