Dear Terrence, The decaf came in on Tuesday, three cases in a cardboard box with a sunrise printed on the side, which I took as a personal insult. I have stacked them in the back by the mop bucket, where the health inspector never looks, and I have told Ray on the grill that if anyone asks for it, we are out.

You asked me to try it. You said the doctor wanted me off the caffeine after the business with my heart in March, and I said my heart is fine, it is the rest of me that is in trouble. Eleven hours a night on this stretch of Route 62 with nobody for company but the coyotes and the lorries thundering past. A woman needs something hot that tastes like a decision.

Last night a man in a pressed shirt pulled in at two and asked for decaf. I looked at him for a long time over the pot, the way Mother used to look at the Hoover salesman. Then I poured him a mug of the real stuff, black as the road at midnight, and told him the decaf was in the back with the cleaning supplies and he was welcome to go and find it. He left a pound under the saucer and a note on a napkin that said only: Brave.

I have kept the napkin. It is in the till, under the twenties, where you would never think to look. So the mug stays full, and so do I. Come out in the spring and I will make you one myself. Bring a bigger mug, and tell that doctor he can have his decaf on his own time. Love, Aunt Dot.
