Mrs Okonedo had sold tea at the Saturday market in Rye for thirty years, and in all that time nobody had ever bought a cup and left it sitting in the car park. So when the grey cat came over the wall at eleven and settled itself into the blue-rimmed cup on the trestle table, she let it be. The cup was a chipped thing from her mother's dresser, the one with the small black heart painted on the side that she never sold, because it was the only cup she liked to drink from herself.

The cat did not move for the rest of the morning. Customers asked whether it was for sale. A man in a waxed jacket offered forty pounds, then sixty, then said he would take the saucer too. Mrs Okonedo kept pouring, kept smiling, and kept the heart turned towards the road.

By four the stallholders had packed away and the cat still had not moved. Mrs Okonedo sat down on an upturned crate and finally asked it, quietly, what it wanted. The cat blinked slowly, stood, stepped out onto the saucer and walked off towards the church without looking back. She lifted the cup and found, pressed into the wet ring where the cat had been, a folded note in her mother's handwriting. It said only: kettle's on, come home.
