Traditional-style flash design of a banner reading BREAKFAST ALWAYS, surrounded by a coffee mug, coffee pot, waffle, fried eggs, bacon and orange slices.

Breakfast always banner with eggs and bacon

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A coloured flash drawing on a plain white background showing a pale blue ribbon banner with the words BREAKFAST ALWAYS in black lettering. Behind and around the banner sit a red mug marked #1, a silver coffee pot, a golden waffle, two fried eggs, crispy bacon and orange slices, all drawn with bold black outlines and flat shading. The composition is centred and compact, with the banner wrapping across the middle of the arrangement.

Dear Nan, the fleet came in on Tuesday with the holds full of haddock and Skipper Dunne still swearing at the winch, so forgive the handwriting, I have not slept properly since. Breakfast went out at five every morning we were at sea, and I am writing this at the galley table with the pan still warm and the kettle ticking as it cools.

The red mug marked #1 belongs to Ray, who bought it at Grimsby market for a pound and drank from it so often the number wore nearly off. The waffle iron is my own idea. I wedged it into the bench with a tea towel after the February storm, when nobody could hold a fork and the thing was the only object aboard that stayed put. Dougie takes his eggs yolk up and says if he is going to be sick he would rather be sick on something he chose. Nobody has been sick on my eggs yet.

The night the Marigold lost her engine off the Dogger, the radio went quiet for six hours and we ate the whole tray of bacon cold, sitting on the lockers with our boots on. Orange slices too, because Ray swore they stopped scurvy and he has never once been wrong about anything he believed. Nobody said much. Nobody needed to.

I have painted the board over the hatch now, BREAKFAST ALWAYS, with a blue ribbon curling round the words like the tinsel Mum used to hang in the front room. When the lads come through the door in the dark, the first thing they see is that board and the second thing is the smell of bacon, and I reckon that is the whole job, really. Write back and tell me the chippy is still open.
