Colourful abstract foot tattoos with roses above the ankles

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

Two bare feet rest on a pale teal sheet, photographed from above with the toes pointing towards the camera. The tattoos cover the top of each foot with bold, graphic shapes in red, orange, grey, pale blue and pink, outlined in black, and a small skull sits near the left toes. Red and yellow roses with shaded petals appear on the lower legs above the feet.

Dear Nell, the ferry didn't run again this morning, so I've been sitting on the harbour wall with my notebook, trying to make the tide tables agree with what the gulls are telling me. Mr Pascoe says the red sun-circle over the pier means the big spring tide is coming early, though he's said that about every full moon since Easter.

The bay looks different this week. The grey cliffs have gone flat and blue, as if someone pressed a slate tile into the water, and the old wreck of the Marigold is showing its ribs again beside the orange buoy. Last Tuesday a crab came out from under her timbers with a spotted shell like a cracked jug, and Ada from the chandlery swore it was her uncle's spirit. I told her crabs don't carry spirits. She said I'd know better once I'd lived here as long as she had.

Here is what I haven't told anyone. I found a skull on the sand below the slipway, small as a thimble and bleached so clean it looked carved. I put it in my coat pocket meaning to ask Pascoe what it was, and I've carried it since, the way you'd hold a stone you meant to throw and never did. It isn't mine to keep. Tomorrow I'll take it back to the tideline.

The ferry should run on Thursday. Come out on it if you can. Bring the good thread, and we'll mend the sail together, and I'll show you where the sun drops into the water and turns the whole bay the colour of a struck match.

Yours, Maud
