Matching sugar skull tattoos on both feet
Traditional · Other · Mixed · Photo
Two mirrored sugar skull designs cover the top of each foot, with a spiderweb across the crown of each skull and flower motifs above the eyes. The left skull is shaded in black and grey with a gold tone, while the right is in full colour with red, blue and yellow, and both sit above clusters of roses and leaves. Bold black outlines and flat fills give the piece a classic, solid look against the pale skin and dark leather background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The abbot had given them two panels for the chapel doors and one afternoon of light before vespers. Ignacio had mixed the ash-grey wash three times already, and he was still not satisfied with it when Tomas came down the cloister steps with the red lead tucked under his arm like a loaf. They had shared a cell for forty years and had never once painted anything without one of them wanting it louder than the other.

Ignacio began with the spiderweb because the dormitory rafters had been full of them since the autumn, and it seemed a sin to leave one out. He drew it fine across the crown of his skull, one thread at a time, while Tomas worked on the other panel with a brush worn to a point. Tomas filled his roses with pink and gold, and the sun came through the west window and made the wet paint look like it was breathing. Ignacio kept his own roses dark, the colour of the coal they burned in the kitchen.
When the bell rang, the panels were still wet, and the abbot came to look at them with his hands folded inside his sleeves. He studied Ignacio's skull for a long time, then Tomas's, then turned back to Ignacio's. In the hollow of its left eye, where Ignacio had left bare board, someone had painted a small flame in orange, and beside it a single yellow petal, neat as a fingernail.
Ignacio did not ask who had done it. The abbot did not ask either. He only nodded and said the doors would go up at Candlemas, and that the two of them should walk down the path together to see how the light fell on the pair of them.
