Colourful cat in a bow tie on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A hairless cat with large round eyes and a pink nose faces forward, wearing a large layered bow tie with a small gem at its centre. The linework is fine and dark, with soft gradients of pink, orange, yellow, blue and purple filling the head, ears and bow. The design sits on the forearm against a blurred green grass background with autumn leaves.

Don't you look at me like that, the cat was aboard before the nets were, and he had better manners than the rest of us. Admiral, the boys called him, because he sat on the wheelhouse roof like he'd been commissioned by the Crown. Bald as a boiled egg, with great round eyes that made the Dutch skipper cross himself. He walked up the gangplank at Scarrow one March morning and that was that.

The bow tie was the thing. Layered like a sunset somebody had folded and pinned under his chin, scarlet fading to violet at the edges, with a sea-glass stone at the knot. Old Ivy Pascoe swore a seamstress who'd lost her man off the Dogger had tied it, and I never knew if she was lying, but I never once saw that tie crooked. Not in forty gales. Not when the hold flooded and we bailed with saucepans.

Then the February night the engine quit a mile off the Stacks. Fog like wet wool, Jack Hebble swearing at the dead motor. The cat got up, walked the length of the bow with his tail straight up, and sat facing a black gap in the rocks none of us could see. Jack said we'd be on the reef in ten minutes if we ignored the fool. So we rowed after him, the sea-glass catching our one lamp, through to calm water.

We landed the catch by morning, every box of it, and the cat ate the first mackerel off the scale like a bishop at a christening. Jack still says the tie was the only thing aboard that never got wet. I say that's a lie, but I'll let him have it.
