Geometric fox head on the thigh
Geometric · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A faceted, low-poly style fox head faces forward, built from angular planes of orange, red and dark brown with a black nose. The fine shading creates a sense of light across the face, and the tattoo sits centrally on the outer upper thigh. A pale cream dress is gathered at the top of the frame, and the background is softly blurred.

The rain has been coming sideways across the market since seven, and you have stopped pretending the tarpaulin keeps anything dry. Your stall is the one with the cracked lantern hung from a hook, the one nobody else wants to stand beside. Under the sodden awning you are sorting a crate of chipped crockery when the fox arrives, trotting between the cabbage boxes as if the wet were a rumour he had decided to ignore.

He does not look like a thief. He looks like a man who has spent decades cutting the same shape out of paper and has grown tired of curves. His coat is rust and charcoal, split into planes the way light breaks on a puddle, and when he lifts his chin you see the sharp black nose before you see his eyes. He wants the lantern. He does not say so. He sets down a single coin, warm from his pocket, and waits.
You hand it over. Twenty years on this pitch have taught you a fair price when the weather is making everyone else leave. He turns the lantern in his paws, holds it to the grey light, and tilts it until the cracked glass throws a dozen small orange triangles across the awning, across your hands, across the wet cobbles where the pigeons have given up. Each one fits neatly beside the last, as though the whole market had been folded from one sheet.
"Shut up shop," he says, though you have not spoken. "The rain will be over by dusk, and you will want to see what this does at dusk."
You close the stall. At dusk the rain stops, and the lantern, carried off under his arm, has become a hundred angled lights on the wet stone. You walk home between them, counting, and find you are one short.
