Colourful chameleon and leaves on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A chameleon with a curled tail sits on a branch of stylised orange, red and yellow leaves. Its body is patterned with teal and purple stripes, and the head has a purple crest and a bright eye. Bold black outlines and saturated colour fills give it a graphic, neo-traditional look against the lighter skin of the thigh.

Now sit closer, because my voice goes after the kettle and I'll not tell it twice. Our Ada worked the Saturday counter at Pruitt's greengrocers in Deal, and tucked away in the back of the cold room, between the sprouts and the crates of Cox's, lived a chameleon. Nobody had bought it. It had come over in a crate of Seville oranges, got lost in the damp, and taken to sitting on a bough of autumn leaves that Ada's father had nailed up for the harvest display.

The creature changed to suit whoever stood nearest. When the fishmonger's boy came in sulking, it went teal and striped like the sea off the pier, and when old Mrs Lunt haggled over the price of leeks, its crest flushed purple as a bishop's cushion. Ada watched it over the scales for one whole winter, and it never once showed her the same colour twice. She said that was the first honest thing she'd met all year, and she would stand by it in front of the vicar.
Then the shop was sold and the cold room was to be cleared. Ada took the lizard home in a jam jar with a sprig of those red and gold leaves packed round it. On the number 14 bus it turned orange to match the leaves, and the driver asked her if she was carrying a lantern, and she said she was, more or less.
The jar sits in my kitchen window now. The leaves have gone to dust, but the chameleon still curls its tail round a twig of nothing, patient as a clock, and when the light comes through the glass it takes on whatever colour the morning needs.
